Most years we start our own seeds but with the longer, harder winter than usual this season, we ended up scrambling just to stay warm. It's nearly impossible to buy dry, seasoned firewood anywhere around here in January, so we had to fight with soggy, green wood the last two months of burning season just to keep from freezing to death.

There's something a bit Zen like in the act of stacking wood.

Maybe it's the monotony of the task or the constant repetition of movements, but whatever it is, after a few minutes doing something mindless like this, it's pretty easy for me to get lost in the action and go on auto-pilot.

The days are again slowly lengthening as our tiny planet makes it's way along a never ending journey around the sun.

This morning I'm waiting for a load of firewood to be delivered. We aren't close to running out of last year's supply, but there's plenty of room in the shed now to begin filling the space for next winter's needs.

I like cats, though I'm extremely allergic to the little varmints. They keep the mouse population under control, and the squirrels don't stand much of a chance either.

The only real trouble with the cats is that they have no natural predators around these parts, so they breed, well, like rabbits. I found a good source of cheap mulch at a local lumber processing plant (I can't bring myself to call it a sawmill, it's too big), $30 per scoop.
